SAORSA conquers Gigha

25th August 2008

SAORSA does its first full 16 mile circumnavigation!
Saturday 8 a.m. - Skipper John Martin, with his able crew of Malcolm, Vojcek, Dougie, Tony, John and Bev on the helm set sail into the wreathes of mist from the catwalk. Their objective was to voyage all the way round Gigha to raise money for the Air Ambulance landing lights – sorely needed for the island to be able to evacuate folk during the hours of darkness from the island’s airstrip. Catching the tide, Saorsa fairly hissed under sail with a light following breeze. By nine o’clock the north end had been rounded and the oars brought into action. The mist slowly lifted and the wind dropped. With man and machine in perfect harmony the able crew rowed the west side and through the treacherous reefs by Craro, followed by seals and resting briefly by the south pier so as not to arrive back at Ardminish too early – in fact the skipper’s skills docked Saorsa just before the Raft Race and the following collection raised £223 for the cause.

Keep watching for more information on the landing lights fund for Gigha - this desperately needed resource will feature in future fund-raising campaigns.
