A year in the life of...

1/3/07 - Mick's Diary

TIME

Time where has it gone? We are now well in to spring, the Snowdrops are carpeting the ground in the woods between the Lodge and Achamore farm. Daffodils are displaying their magnificent colures of deep yellow all over the Island , when I look at the Daffodils that grow in and around our croft it amazes me how year after year the odd one or two over comes the masses of brambles and push upwards to give us that extra pleasure we look for this time of year.

This all seems a long time ago since the bad weather of January when we were being constantly battered by gales, not knowing when morning came, if the roof of the Croft or the shed would still be there. It was well into January before I was able to get the boat out of the water, ready for it's annual clean up and painting. This meant that we had many worrying days and nights not knowing if the boat would survive another gale that would blow force 9 to 10.

Although it is still early March, and we are occasionally getting a good blow of wind with heavy showers of rain, nature is getting ready for the summer days ahead.

At the shore the Mallard and Eider ducks are choosing their mates, the Drake Eider always looks his best when trying to woo a girl friend , how she decides who is the best looking one, with all of the other competition there is remains a mystery.

At the back of the Croft we have a lot of rough ground, and a few trees, a pair of Hoody Crows have occupied these trees ever since we have lived on Gigha, this year is no exception, their day is taken up flying back and forth carrying sticks to repair last years nest, not that there was a great deal of last years nest left after the gales previously mentioned.

The next floral event to look forward to on Gigha will be when the whins are a mass of colour, specially when you look from the road in the village up to Brae house. We have all this and much more to look forward to over the coming months.
