Pond Garden
The picture on the right shows how the pond used to look before 2008. ( I must learn how to put new pictures on this site as it now looks very different)
Topographically, this area of the garden is the lowest point and so naturally water gathers here. Most of the peripheral plantings are original, however, the pond itself has been enlargened three-fold to create a reflective and contemplative water feature, trying to create a balance for visitors and the natural wildlife alike.
Many new and existing plants have been planted including a new collection of primula as well as the naturalised P. pulverulenta which include:
- P. capitata
- P. chunganensis
- P. sikkimensis
- P. watsonii
- P. serratifolia
- P. chianantha subsp. 'Ingans'
- P. 'Inverewe'
- P. viallii
- P. veris
Other new plants to look out for include:
- Cercidiphyllum japonicum 'Morioko Weeping'
- Corylus avellana 'Contorta'
- Caltha biflora var. rotundifolia
- Iris graeberiana
- Iris prismatica
- Lysimachia lichlangensis
- Mecanopsis 'Lingholm'
- Mecanopsis nepaulensis (misapplied)
- Mysotidum hortense
- Paeonia veitchii
- Paeonia mlokosewitschii
- Rubus nepalense
- Scilla peruviana
- Triosteum himalayanum
- Trollius yunnanensis
Most of these plants were all new for the 2010 season. The large clumps of hosta, Iris siberica and Iris chrysographes were lifted and stored until the ground work and liner was completed. We are still trying to get the water levels at a balanced level as we had to re-direct natural water flow from the ditches.
There are still some water plants I would like to add and modify the existing planting scheme.
